MORE FUN GAMES .....
Our club "Scroungers" (Sunday morning Men social bowlers ) have a wind-up
day at the end of the season which a mainly a FUN DAY .
The first game of the day is called "The Spider" in which all the bowlers
stand around the four sides of one green and must keep One foot on the bank
and the other on the green at the time of delivery of the bowl (ONE BOWL ONLY)
to a jack in the centre of the green .
All bowlers release at the same time when the command "GO" is given , the
object of the game is to finish as near as possible to a " COIN " which was placed
under the Jack when the game was set up . The uninitiated bowler tries to bowl
to the "Jack" which is usually carried away in the mass of bowls somewhere across
the green . The worst part is trying to find your bowl afterwards in as many as
forty bowls ?
The day continues with the Major competition where all the weekly winners
throughout the season play off to find the "King Scrounger"who will represent his
club at the King Scrounger’s Event where representatives from all the local clubs
play off . The non-winners play in an "Odds & Sods" Trophy competition during the
fun day . Lunch is usually a BBQ and a few beers followed by another fun game called
"Corner to Corner Pairs Challenge Match" and any team can challenge another by lodging
a $5 nomination fee , a four ends only game is played with two bowls for each player
being allowed and a score of one shot for each bowl nearest to the Jack which is placed
about 2 metres out from the corner ; and bowls must stay on the green to count .Two games
are played at a time , so bowls may collide in the centre of the green which adds to the
chaos . The winners are the undefeated team at the end of the day , and they receive a
prize of the nomination money less a percentage for the club . I have been on the winning
team for the last two years . Any Challengers ??

It is quite common in the UK to play “Penny on the Jack’ after a match. Not quite so hectic as Peter’s game, but similar.
In this case the Jack is set up with a coin on top. Each player plays his/her woods as usual, then regardless of where the jack is, the winner is the one closest to the coin. Each player then ‘coughs up’ the value of the coin to the winning player. There is usually some ‘wag’ who will fire the coin off the jack, so that nobody can see where it has fallen!
