Hello Dave, after seeing you had no responses to your query I thought you might like to hear how I got on when starting lawn bowls last August 2008. I joined a local club and felt very alien as everyone knew each other and I didn't have a clue about anything to do with bowls but they made me very welcome and loaned me some bowls from their extensive stock of old woods in a dark cupboard. You really need to play for a while before investing in quite an expensive item plus there is a big variety out there in weight and bias. They insist on a particular code of dress and I managed to get some white trousers and warm fleece in a sale until I know exactly what they will require me to wear (as and if I ever reach match ability) hope this helps, best wishes, Judy

I do not know which Club you joined but they should immediately introduce the idea of assigning a Mentor to all new members. Thus you should have had one person to tell you about the club and bowls and show you around and introduce you to members and the facilities of the Club This person should also have provided you with the information that you lacked and which the Club should have provided.
In addition, the club should prepare a handouot whicht hey can give to all new members. This hadnout will not prove "perfect" in its first edition but they should consult with new members and their Mentor and find out they can improve what they have written.
YOu will find out that bowls rates as an inexpensive sport - once you get over the initial costs. Certainly you should not rush into buying something like bowls. Most shops offer you the possibility of trying out a set of bowls. Further you can always buy a second hand set - possibly your club has such sets from members who have died and donated their bowls. However read carefully the "blurb" that the bowls manufzacturers put out and see the complete lack of logic of their claims.
If you would like any other ideas just contact me. I hope that you finally settle down and enjoy your game and your Club. If not, look around and joiona better-managed club!!!
If you want more information look at my web site.
