BOWLS TACTICS AND HEAD PROBLEMS
1. Many Clubs talk about the need to train Players in bowls tactics (how to build a head). In my opinion, few Clubs appear to do much about this objective.
2. The head problems in the web site take ONE approach to improving bowls tactics.
3. Some material on this topic has diagrams for Readers to consider and asks – What shot should you play? My heads take a different approach. They ask Players to choose three different possible shots for each head and record the advantages and disadvantages of each shot. This approach encourages Players to consider a variety of possibilities – not just one correct shot.
4. In addition, Players have to rate each shot on a scale of one to ten - where one means – “clearly the worst shot the Skipper could play/call” and ten – “clearly the best possible shot”.
5. I hope that sufficient Readers will complete the form provided for each head and I can gather a variety of opinions so that Readers will expand their view of particular heads. My web site allows for this possibility. I will publish the results.
6. In addition I will write comments on the efforts of different Players – IF REQUESTED. Players will realise that my comments may have serious flaws in them. They will have to decide whether they gain any benefits from them.
7. Many of the heads have two situations for the same diagram. The second situation often asks Players to deal with the head as the LAST end of a game and they know the particular scores for both Teams and Sides. Thus this approach offers another aspect of bowls tactics.
8. I have a detailed analysis of these last ends of many heads and will supply if Players send me an answer to a particular head.
9. Almost all the heads come from real life. Some Readers will enjoy Head No 14 that comes from an interstate game.
