HOW TO USE THE LAWN BOWLS CALENDAR

by Lesley Dickinson

The Calendar is designed to make it easy for event promotors to advise bowlers, when and where their event is to take place, what to wear, entrance fees, where to park, where to stay etc. By the same token it should make it easy for Bowlers to locate events which are of interest to them.

To make it easy to find an event, you can either scroll through the event names in date order by clicking on the blue 'Read' button, or Search the record files by clicking on the 'Search' button.

The files may be searched for any word or combination of words, to speed up the process of locating records containing them. The Calendar Search Routine has additional built in limiters so you can restrict your search if you wish to a particular country or month or year.

You can add a NEW record by clicking on the blue ADD button. The entry fields are:-

  • PASSWORD This entry is to prevent others from changing or deleting your entry without your knowledge. It doesn't matter what it is so long as you can remember it! It is case sensitive, so remember to note which are Capital letters and which are not.
  • START DATE The date on which your event STARTS. (Some tournaments may cover several days). The START date is used for sorting the Calendar entries. Competitions within the event can be entered where you are asked to describe and promote your event. However, there is nothing stopping you from entering every Competition individually if you want! In this case you might want to NAME the Event the same in each case with an add on - WORLD BOWLS (Tuesday), then WORLD BOWLS (Wednesday) OR SKEGNESS TOURNAMENT (Singles Day), then SKEGNESS TOURNAMENT (Pairs Day) etc. Repetitive details can be recovered by using your BACK key to recover the form after each entry.
  • END DATE The date on which your event ENDS. (Some tournaments may cover several days). If left blank, this date will automatically duplicate your start date, so if you have a one day event, there is no need to enter an end date. This END date is used to delete out of date entries, so an event which covers several days will not be deleted until it is over.
  • TIME The time the event starts. (24 hour clock, ie 1pm=1300)
  • EVENT The Name of your event. This might be a one-off competition or a Tournament or Fundraiser, but must have a link to Bowls.
  • COUNTRY (of Venue) Select the Country where the event takes place. If the Country you require is not listed, select 'unknown' and enter the Country in the alternative box. This entry is required for the Search Routine and it is necessary that it is exactly as other entries for that Country so that they are selected as a group.
  • VENUE Enter the Name and Address of the Venue.
  • SPECIAL NOTES (Limit 200 characters) Enter event specific details like Route Instructions, Car Parking Facilities, Entry Fees, Competitors' Dress etc.
  • DESCRIBE AND PROMOTE YOUR EVENTYou have up to 600 characters to give information or entice folks to your event. Perhaps best worked out in advance and Cut & Pasted into the form, or you can go off-line whilst you complete the form.
  • CONTACT NAME(required). Preferably full name and title Mr Francis Briggs, then there is no question whether you are male or female, or prefer Ms or are another F. Briggs!
  • PERSONAL POSTCODE(required) Enter your own PERSONAL home postcode/zip. It is a user check for administration purposes, and is not displayed unless entered with your address. It is also CASE SENSITIVE so enter it as it should be used so that you will know how to enter it later.
  • POSITION Secretary/Treasurer/Event Organiser - whatever your title in relation to the Business/Club or Organisation you represent.
  • BUSINESS/ORGANISATION/CLUB NAME'Boston Indoor Bowls Club' OR 'Friskney Short Mat Bowls Club' OR whatever but make it clear - don't abbreviate!
  • ADDRESS The address boxes are fairly self-explanatory. You will get an error message if you submit the form with only part of an address, but you have the option of not entering your address, as long as there is some other point of contact, either a telephone or fax number, or e-mail link. You must also tell us whether the address is your own, or that of your organisation. (It will be displayed slightly differently) or if if you have not entered an address deliberately.
  • TEL Enter your home telephone if you wish. The international code will help those abroad. You have room to enter office and/or extension numbers too!
  • FAX As above but for fax.
  • E-MAIL Enter your own e-mail address. Clicking on your name will allow people to e-mail you, and if you select confirmation of your entry we need it for that.

Change your Entry or Delete it. You will need to identify yourself with your password in order to be able to do this. (This is to protect your entries from unauthorised access.) You will need to enter the password you created when you entered the record and your personal postcode/zip. It should be noted that both Passwords and Postcode/Zips are case sensitive ('a' is not the same as 'A') When your password has been accepted, any entries made with it will be listed so you can make changes as required.

Read Clicking on 'read' will allow you to scroll through an list of event names, in date order. Unless you are just 'cruising' it may be quicker to find specific events, or events in a specific Country or Month by entering all or part of them in the search engine.
