BPL Cup matches were played across three states last weekend with three more qualifiers progressing to the next stage, including last year’s National Champions who scraped through.
In the Victoria and the Moama BC preliminary round, the team of Peter Hall, Matt Liverton, Troy Mansbridge and Melissa Roberts (Moama) won all of their three matches in straight sets to progress to the Regional Finals.
In South Australia, Andrew Grant’s team (Naracoorte) defeated Janine Ciampa’s team (Mundulla) 7-4, 6-1 in the Naracoorte Final.
While at Club Merrylands, it was an epic preliminary final with the team skipped by NZ representative Val Smith losing by the narrowest of margins to Neil Burkett’s team 5-3, 3-4, 0-1 in an all-Merrylands Final.
Neil’s team that includes Michael Clarke and Shawn Thompson, were the inaugural winners of the BPL Cup in 2017.
There are seven more preliminary rounds of the BPL Cup this weekend, at Inverell East (NSW); Club Grandviews (NSW); Sebastopol (VIC); Colac (VIC); Bundoora RSL (VIC); Highton (VIC); Mt Lawley (WA) and Stirling (WA).
Entries for all of these venues will close at midnight on Wednesday.
The BPL Cup is open to all Club teams of any gender in a test to see who can be the best Club team in this short, action-packed format.
The winners of each BPL Cup State/Territory Final will win an all-expenses-paid trip to Club Pine Rivers for the National Finals which will be televised on Fox Sports around the country.
There are more preliminary rounds being played in every state and territory until mid-August. To find a venue near you, or for more details, refer to the BPL Cup webpage at www.bowls.com.au/events/bpl-cup
