Retiree lawn bowls enthusiasts in Adelaide’s south have rubbed shoulders with the sport’s elite at a once-in-a-lifetime coaching session with Australian Jackaroo Karen Murphy.
Residents at Stockland’s Hillsview Retirement Village in Happy Valley and Unity Retirement Village in Aberfoyle Park participated in free coaching sessions with the Australian Commonwealth Games gold medalist.
Residents received tips and hints to sharpen their skills and improve their lawn bowling technique.
The two sessions have been provided as part of Stockland’s three-year partnership with Bowls Australia.
Stockland’s Hillsview Retirement Village in Happy Valley – which is one of the retirement living operators 11 villages across Adelaide – has a competition-sized, natural turf bowling green.
See below for some feedback from the residents –
Val Hicks, 78-years-old, Hillsview Retirement Village resident:
“It was great having someone from the Australian team to give us some advice. I usually play golf but I’m a self-taught social lawn bowler, so these lessons were very helpful. Karen’s tips on how to get your bowl down the line and to the kitty were invaluable.”
Arthur Turrell, 80-years-old, Hillsview Retirement Village resident and President of the village’s bowling club:
“I really enjoyed Karen’s coaching clinic and appreciated all her advice and tips on how to improve, even at my age. I’m looking forward to putting the tips into practice at my next game of lawn bowls. Getting down low, close to the ground and playing cleanly and slowly were Karen’s best advice.”
