Young-gun Jackaroos to contest World Youth Champs

Four of the sport’s rising stars will wear the green and gold uniform while contesting the World Youth Championships next year, Bowls Australia confirmed today.

The World Youth Championships is the sport’s only international under-25 event, and will be staged at the Gold Coast’s Broadbeach Bowls Club from Saturday, February 24 to Friday, March 2.

National Selectors have opted for four Australian Jackaroos, featuring both of this year’s singles runner-ups, in Corey Wedlock and Ellen Ryan, who have been granted an opportunity to go one step further, and joining them is 2015 Australian Open singles winner Aaron Teys and former winner Kristina Kristic in the 2018 edition of the Championships. 

All enjoyed successful campaigns when they contested in the event earlier this year, with six medals shared between them. 

Teys and Ryan were silver medalists in their respective singles competitions only narrowly missing out on gold, while Krstic and Teys each nabbed bronze.

Each member will contest in singles competition, while also teaming up with one a squad member of the opposite gender for mixed pairs. 

Ryan and Aron, who both secured the Australian Open singles titles in 2015, will join forces in the mixed pairs, while Krstic and Wedlock will also combine.

Broadbeach will play host to the next-generation of international bowls talent, with many countries around the world set to participate in the prestigious development tournament to be held at the same venue as the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which will be staged a little over a month later. 

Australia enjoyed a successful outing in the competition’s last outing in April this year, taking home nine medals in total.

The young Jackaroos will be looking to acquire the coveted singles trophies this time round, with the men’s and women’s singles being won by Wales and Canada respectively in the competition’s previous instalment.
