The four main formats

Exact bowls and ends can vary by competition, so always check the event conditions of play.

1 v 1

Singles

One player against another. You make every tactical decision and deliver every bowl yourself.

Often played with four bowls per player
2 v 2

Pairs

Two players per team, normally a lead and a skip. It combines individual consistency with teamwork.

Commonly two, three or four bowls per player
3 v 3

Triples

Three players per team: lead, second and skip. Roles become more specialised as the head develops.

Often played with three bowls per player
4 v 4

Fours

The classic team format with a lead, second, third and skip working together throughout each end.

Usually played with two bowls per player

Social and club variations

Clubs adapt the game to suit different group sizes, timeframes and experience levels.

Social bowls

A welcoming organised session where teams may be drawn on the day. Formats vary and newcomers are often able to join.

Roll-up

An informal practice or social game arranged by the people present, rather than a formal competition.

2-4-2 Pairs

A pairs variation where the lead delivers two bowls, the skip delivers four, then the lead delivers their final two.

Sets play

The match is divided into sets. Winning more sets—not simply the overall shot total—decides the result.

Jack Attack

A shorter, fast-moving team format designed to make bowls accessible and social. Local session rules can vary.

Club variations

Names such as scroungers, tabs, nominated pairs and mixed events describe local structures or eligibility. Check the listing for details.
