Four years ago, Elizabeth Shipley was volunteering behind the scenes at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, helping prepare rinks, moving equipment and supporting athletes during the Bowls competition.
Next month, she will return to the Commonwealth Games as part of Team England, this time as director to visually impaired athlete Sally-Ann Lewis-Wall.
Elizabeth’s journey highlights the many opportunities that exist within bowls. From volunteers and officials to directors and athletes, there are countless ways to be part of the sport and make an impact.
Directors play a vital role in visually impaired bowls, providing information, guidance and support that enables athletes to compete at the highest level. As Elizabeth explains, successful directing is built on trust, communication, adaptability and a deep understanding of each player’s individual needs.
Thank you to Bowls International for sharing Elizabeth’s story.
