Lawn Bowls Nova Scotia is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Nova Scotia Lawn Bowls legend Steve Bezanson after a long battle with cancer.
Steve, affectionally nicknamed “the Big Dog”, debuted for Nova Scotia on the National Stage in 1988 and went on to represent our province in an illustrious career at 42 National Championships and becoming Canadian Champion an impressive 9 times (Men’s Pairs- 2009, 2010, 2012, 2022. Men’s Triples- 2016. Men’s Senior Triples- 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017). He debuted internationally for Canada as a member of the National Team in 2001 (Men’s Cap #88) and proudly represented the country wearing the Maple Leaf at the 2001 Asia Pacific Championship in Melbourne, Australia (winning a Men’s Fours Silver Medal) and the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England. He also won many titles in the US Open and other events around the western United States. His impact reached far beyond his own illustrious playing career, serving as a coach and mentor for many who wanted to develop their skills and compete on the greens at any level.
His impact reached beyond the sport of Lawn Bowls, having represented Dalhousie University in Men’s Basketball as starting point guard for the Dalhousie Tigers, winning a Canadian Senior Basketball Championship for Nova Scotia, playing basketball at the semi-pro level in Europe, and winning provincial track and field titles representing West Kings District High School. Professionally, he was a celebrated sports journalist as a reporter and editor for The Chronicle Herald for over 40 years- using his signature brand of storytelling to shine a spotlight on our sport and sports across our province and beyond. A few weeks ago, Steve was recognized by his home community by being inducted as a member of the 2026 Class of the Kingston Greenwood Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his illustrious career across athletics both on and off the field of play.
LBNS extends our sincere condolences to his wife, Lorraine, Children Vivian, Maggie and Steve Jr., their extended family and all throughout our lawn bowls community, both within the province and beyond, who were impacted by Steve and his dedication to our sport. Steve’s drive for excellence in everything he did was inspiring to all who knew him and will continue to impact our lawn bowls community for many years to come.
