01

One idea, many local names

The wording changes between countries, regions and clubs.

You may see sessions advertised as Barefoot Bowls, Casual Bowls, Group Bowls, Corporate Bowls, a roll-up, a come-and-try day or a club’s own name.

They are not always identical formats, but they share the same welcoming idea: an accessible way for people to have a go without committing to formal competition.

02

What to expect

Every club runs things a little differently, but most casual sessions follow a similar pattern.

1

Arrive and get set up

A host assigns your group a rink, suitable bowls and any equipment you need.

2

Learn the essentials

You will be shown how to hold the bowl, choose the biased side and aim towards the jack.

3

Play a simple game

Groups are divided into teams and play a relaxed version suited to the time available.

4

Enjoy the social side

The emphasis is usually on conversation, encouragement and having fun together.

03

Before you go

A quick conversation with the club avoids surprises.

Ask whether you need to book

Group sessions often need advance notice, especially at busy times or when food and drinks are included.

Confirm footwear

Flat-soled shoes are a safe default, but the club will tell you what is permitted on its green.

Check the price and inclusions

Equipment hire, coaching, catering and venue areas may be included or charged separately.

Tell them about your group

Share group size, ages and accessibility needs so the club can suggest the right experience.
