Feel at home on the green

Bowls etiquette, without the guesswork

A little courtesy helps everyone enjoy the game. These are the common habits that protect the green, respect other players and make newcomers feel welcome.

01

Before you step on the green

A few small checks make your visit easier for everyone.

Arrive ready

Be on time for a booked session. Let the club know if you will be late or cannot attend.

Check footwear

Wear clean, flat-soled shoes unless the host gives different guidance. The green needs careful treatment.

Ask, don't guess

Clubs differ on dress, equipment and where visitors should go. Your host can explain the local arrangements.

02

During the game

Give each player room to concentrate and let the end finish properly.

Give the bowler spaceStay still and quiet during delivery. At the mat end, wait at least one metre behind the mat. At the head, stand behind the jack and clear of play; keep away from the head when your side is not in possession.
Protect the surfaceDo not drop or dump bowls onto the green, and follow the club's directions around the ditch and bank.
Leave the head alone until the score is agreedLeave bowls and the jack in place until the score is agreed. Let the designated measurer handle any movement needed for measuring.
Play with generosityEncourage teammates, acknowledge good bowls from either side and treat every player with respect.
03

After the last end

Finish as warmly as you began.

Thank the people who played and helped

Congratulate the other side, help return equipment where the club asks and thank the host or volunteers. If you are unsure about a custom, ask; an inclusive welcome matters more than knowing every tradition on day one.
